Equipped with 3 or 4 air filled pneumatic tires electric counterbalanced pneumatic lift trucks are typically used outside on yard surfaces such as crushed concrete, packed gravel, or stabilized limestone. These electric sit down forklifts or liftrucks have a larger turning radius than solid cushion warehouse tire forklifts and liftrucks due to their use of pneumatic tires.

It is not recommended the pneumatic tire forklifts be used on dirt, except on a very limited basis, as long as it's well packed and not loose, or muddy. Electric sit down forklifts or lift trucks with pneumatic tires can also be used on hard, smooth surfaces such as concrete.

Space requirements of the warehouse will help determine the use of three or four wheel electric counterbalanced pneumatic liftrucks. Four-Wheel Electric forklifts have a larger tuning radius that the three-wheel versions. This allows the three-wheel liftrucks to turn more quickly and operate in a smaller area. Solid-tire forklifts will have a smaller tuning radius than those utilizing pneumatic tires.
